When you’ve got a bad toothache, getting to sleep at night can be extremely difficult. Unfortunately, times like these are exactly when you need rest the most. But how can you get the shuteye you need when all you can do is focus on the pain? Here are five useful tips to help you fall asleep when you’re distracted by dental discomfort.
Keep Your Head Up
While it’s completely understandable that you’d like to lie down and fall asleep as quickly as possible when you have a bad toothache, unfortunately this may make your pain worse. That’s because when you like completely flat, your blood rushes to your head, causing the pain to intensify. The good news is that you can still hit the hay; just make sure to like down with your head elevated, either by stacking a few pillows underneath it, or by sleeping on a reclining chair or bed.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers
Over the counter (OTC) pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help take some of the edge off toothache pain, but it should only be used temporarily. Even if it makes you feel as good as new, it is still extremely important that you see your dentist as soon as possible. Toothache pain is the sign of a more serious problem such as a cavity or tooth infection, and if left untreated it can easily worsen or even spread.
Watch Your Diet
Another important tip for reducing toothache pain is to be careful with what you eat. Be sure to avoid anything that will make your discomfort worse, especially right before bed. Skip any foods that are very cold, hard, sweet, or acidic, and try not to chew on the side of your mouth that’s hurting.
It’s a Wash
Although it is not recommended that you use a mouthwash with alcohol on a daily basis (alcohol can dry out your mouth and make breath worse), they can be very helpful if you have a toothache by keeping your teeth clean and acting as a numbing agent. Just swish some around right before you head to bed.
